Day 2 -full steam ahead

Full steam ahead – YES!.. but let’s reflect.  Last night was a rough night of little sleep, trying to acclimate to the new place and get into the new groove.    After a coffee trip to the cafe it was clear I need some melatonin per KB.  I picked some up at the store on the way home and looking forward to trying.  So how did I do for day 2?

  • didn’t drink enough water (still going on the 1 G)
  • exercise – check
  • all other items – check

Enjoy tonight’s lyrics from twenty one pilots

Sometimes you gotta bleed to know
That you’re alive and have a soul
But it takes someone to come around
To show you how

Here’s to day 2, and tomorrow I will be sharing the love from another milestone started on the personal front.  If you don’t know.. well you will tomorrow.

Skateboarding is not a crime.. Eating the road is..

So what is contributing to the 30 day challenge? this is.  I was longboarding (skateboarding) and it was dark (not ideal) ,  I didn’t turn correctly and then proceeded to meet the ground.  It was quite humorous, and snapped my humorous, but in the end was not humorous.   Let’s just say it was a great experience and yes I would do it again, but next time on water.     Here’s a snap shot of the accident, me after and the staples.   Yes staples and was it fun to have them slowly pull them out of my skin.

What I can say is that the doctor was pretty awesome for not cutting through my tattoos to make the incision for the surgery, thank you Doc.  Now for my arm being metal now, well it’s a great story and feels funny when your getting a massage.

Onward – more to do, more to NOT damage.   bahhh..

Massage Envy – so that happened..

I feel as though I am catching up on the last few days tonight and hope to continue this thread over the next 30 days.    After this last move from a house to a home the body was sore and thought it best to get it done.  I called up ME (Massage Envy) and asked for my account status, they said ‘well you have 12 hours stored up’, that means I have been paying for over a year and not gone in.  That certainly is telling isn’t it.    I made the appointment and went this last week.   The gal I saw at first glance seemed cool and would be great for my back/neck.  She asked me where she needs to focus, I said “back and neck”, we agreed, I got into position and then it was ON like DONKEY KONG.

What happens next is only my distant memory of that experience.  She was talking to me, which usually I don’t like to talk in a relaxation massage, but I was there to get my back fixed and apparently I didn’t shut up……. until..   she hit the goose egg of a pain point on my back and I didn’t say a word, but apparently flipped up like a fish.. It was quite funny.   For the next say 5 minutes my mouth was too busy breathing than talking and it was that good kinda of pain.     Okay. so fast forward towards the end and dang that gal rocked her job.   The pain is subsiding and I’m going back to a 90 minute massage this week.   My only parting comment to the gal was “No one can usually make me shut up like that” and that was the truth.

Okay enough of that for the night, time to get on the roller and have some more fun w/ my back..   Cheers.. Have a great night and be safe out there, don’t swipe the wrong way, don’t be bat sh** crazy and stay to your course..    – hilly

“KINGS WORKOUT” – Thanks to the King

Few summers back, in a completely different time I had my nephew staying with us for a few months.  We spent the time looking for the best shake in the sacramento/nor cal area.  We visited more ice creme shops than we could imagine, but finally we found the place where all EPIC dreams of shakes was delivered.  It was Suzie’s  and it was by far the best.  What was good is it was right down the street from where I had all my heart procedures (yah.   it’s still ticking like a beast) and if interested that is a completely different dialogue for another day.

Anyways, let’s get back to the King.   One road trip w/ the entire family we stopped at Fenton’s ice cremery and everybody ordered ice creme.  However, none of could finish our Ice Creme, so what happened well my Nephew “K” ate the rest of everybodys ice creme and at that exact moment I said he will be known as the “KING”.   So there’s how he got my nick name for him and yah.. his stomach was hammered for like 2 days (ha ha).  Okay, so now you know the king..

So.. One day after my heart procedure/surgery I asked the King to outline a work out plan for me..  Here’s what he wrote down for me and exactly what I’m using to kick this 30 day plan off.

Now, I’m sure everybody and brother has “their” workout, but for me this means more than just a work out but a workout from the king.     I also have integrated Cardio everyday and the off days below mean I double/triple my cardio to make up for no weights.

Kings workout

  • Benchpress 3 sets 10-8-5
  • Dumbbell fly’s 3 sets of 10 (barrel)
  • Dumbell bench 3 sets of 10
  • Or – incline bench 3 sets of 10, 8, 5

Biceps

  • 20/20’s
  • 90 degree / dumbbell curl’s
  • Regular or cross curls 3 sets 10

Wednesday (shoulders & triceps)

Shoulders

  • Shrugs 3 sets of 10-8-5
  • Dumbbell flats both way’s (front & sides)

Triceps

  • Cross body triceps 2 sets 10 both way’s (hold each arm ) Dips on a bench 3 sets of 10 Tricep extensions

Friday (back)

Back

  • Lawn mowers 3 sets 10-8-5 (on the bench pulling up – use back) or is this low back hyper extension Standing row 10-8-5 Low back hyper extension 3 setes of 10

Leg’s

  • Leg extension 3 sets of 10
  • Leg curl’s 3 sets of 10
  • Bicycle 3 – 1 min sessions

Now the question is what is the 30 day output going to look like? what does transformation mean? I am competitive, so I am competing , but what does that mean? who wins? what is winning?    Great questions.  No idea yet.  first goal was to set what I needed to change and now I can start thinking about at the end of the 30 days.

I’ll leave you with this, let’s not be stressed out anymore..   Let’s get back to the good ol’ days..

  • “I wish I found some better sounds no one’s ever heard,
I wish I had a better voice that sang some better words,
I wish I found some chords in an order that is new,
I wish I didn’t have to rhyme every time I sang,
  • I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink,
But now I’m insecure and I care what people think.
My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think
  • Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out……. “

30 day challenge – day 1

Today was day 1 of my 30 day challenge.  Everybody seems to be doing these right now, so I took my own spin on what I’m going after.  The Mega Goal is for transformation.  What do I mean for transformation?   Feeling better, stronger, looking better, preparing for the next sport (Kite Surfing) and overall feeling like I’m 14 again.

So.. what’s involved:

  • Exercise 45 mins daily
  • Drink 1 Gallon of water daily
  • Hit the water at least once a week (lungs building)
  • NO Beer or Alcohol
  • Eat breakfast daily, sensible cafe lunch, and no > than 2 meals out for the month
  • Stretch daily
  • Weekly Massage – already scheduled

That’s the plan.  Day 1 – let’s go!    I’m planning or trying to blog daily on my progress, how I feel, etc..    Since today is day 1, it feels good, gym was great.

Thank you Rain.

As I prepare to move to my new home I was busting out all the SUP gear, paddles, boards, etc..   It got me thinking that 2016 is going to be a great year w/ all this rain we are getting.   I’m challenging myself to do at least one race this year just to be complete it.

I’m also thinking this year about paddling around the entire folsom lake (of course when it’s fuller than it was last year).

Camp Far West – a journey through California Gold

It was time to go back to old school today, we took a trip back to Camp Far West, which was one of the first places I took my kayaks out at w/ the family back in the day.   We went to south gates and they were closed, no doubt due to water levels, however north gate was open.   Now, this was just funny to go back where my eldest had a “FROG” experience in his kayak..   So we went on to CFW, however I was looking for frogs.

We hit the gates and saw the sign $15  / day.   Score, it was a bit higher than Sand Harbor and 5 more than ULC, however it was a bit closer.  We went into the store, and apparently they charge per board and we had 3 boards on our roof.   She gave us a break and only charged us for two boards, however still rolled in at $19.00 for the day.   What is great is the boat ahead of us with a dozen kids, were only charged $20.00 for the day.     Yah, it’s a personally owned lake, not a government lake, so I’ll leave it at that.

We hit the boat launch, threw the boards into the water, got a spot and started our expedition to CFW.   We switched boards for the day, I had the cutter, jules had the generator and it was relaxing, a good paddle, but the water was dirty and it was a “DONE” for that lake for at least another year.

We hit our 1 hour plus of paddling and called it a day!

Next adventure ——     who knows..

Is the lake shallow? – time to get a new fin..

At ULC today met a guy that had a new fin on his board that I have been waiting to find.  It was a touring fin made for shallow lakes w/ more surface area to help with less side to side paddle.   Here’s the site.

I have found on amazon – http://www.amazon.com/TRUE-SHALLOW-WATER-TOURING-GREEN/dp/B00USNRM78/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1441591664&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=True+Ames+SWT+SUP+Fin  for a good price.

My plan is to upgrade to these whenever I can, however I assume it will probably happen next season.

If you have one drop me a note, I’d like to hear how they are..

Paddling – I just have to say..

After seeing countless people holding their paddle wrong and saying very little, I almost said something today to two folks.   One individual was telling the other to flip the paddle around the right way, she gave the right reason, but the opposite direction of how to hold the paddle.

As we were finishing up the paddle today, I saw another two folks with their paddles the wrong way.  I finally said something and the individual said ” I’m doing it this way to get more friction and be against the wind”.     My wife asked if that made sense, I said yes if your trying to be macho.. but he was so wrong it was funny.   So.. instead of me telling you, check this site out.

Follow these helpful tips for holding the paddle

  • Always grip the paddle with one hand on the top of the paddle and the other on the center of the shaft. Hold the paddle in front of you with elbows bent at 90 degrees. This should give you comfortable spacing for paddling.
  • The blade will be angled and when paddling remember to keep the blade angle facing away from you.
  • Paddles float so if you fall and must let it go – it won’t sink.

2nd one is the key one, it will be angled away from you, which is usually words away from your body.    I know we are all at different stages of paddling, but please don’t say the opposite or make up a friction story to sound cool.   LOL>

Okay folks, words forward, blades correctly and let’s SUP.

3 Miles to peace and sanity

After a good day in Tahoe on Saturday, we woke up this morning with a mission in mind.  Let’s go to Upper Lake Clementine (Auburn, CA) and let’s paddle from uppers to the furthest away camping site on the lake.

It has been a few months since we were in Auburn to SUP, so the thought of going there was very welcome.  We had most of the gear already packed from the day prior, having locking roof straps for boards is helpful.    We hit the road quickly, drove to ULC, paid the $10.. okay.. hold.   we have not purchased a poppy pass yet and it has proven to be a bummer.   so don’t forget to get your poppy pass.    Back to it..   after going down the bumpy road we hit to the beach.

Loaded up the boards and hit the water.   Paddled 1.5 miles to the final camp site, relaxed and then headed back.  Wind was against us on the way there, however at our backs on the way back to the truck.  Great paddle, Jules was on the new board – Surftech Saber Black  and she ruled the waters today.   She even saw one of her friends today on the water.   We did pack our fins/masks, however we didn’t really find anywhere to snorkel with good water clarity.   Maybe next trip.

I highly recommend if you are a SUP’er in Nor Cal you should hit ULC and spend a few hours exploring a beautiful lake.

Net Net:  Here’s another tool you should have in your stable of tools for SUPing.   http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11307780  – Solar Water Shower – nothing like a hot shower after you finish SUP’ing.
