Sand Harbor – North Lake Tahoe

As we start this journey for sand harbor, I need to scroll back a few days/weeks to start this blog.  Two weeks prior, we were on a journey to Tahoe to find sand harbor, however as I blogged about prior we got a new board (probably my last for awhile .. ugh), and subsequently we were to late to the park.  This meant out of parking, so we traveled around the lake.   As I was talking about this afterwards at work one of the folks on my team mentioned more about sand harbor and the great concerts that were there.   One specific item of feedback I did receive was the following, “go into the end and park there for the day.”   This wasn’t just helpful it was pure awesome as there were a # of items that made that part of the beach area better for us.  1)  Bathrooms were close for Jules & Hay 2) The walk to the beach was short for carrying gear 3) It had great beach entry for SUP and for swimming overall.   Thank you MT!

Now let’s fast forward to the day we left, we decided to leave at 7am to avoid any crowds and get a parking spot (thinking  back two weeks).  We hit the road and it was super quiet all the way there, no traffic, no riff and smooth sailing.   However, as we hit the beach we saw one thing we didn’t see two weeks prior..  WIND!  It was windy and that manifests itself into small waves that remind me of the ocean, however without breaks and without any consistency whatsoever.   What could you do?  well we setup camp and waited to warm up from the 50’s to the mid 60’s.   After what seemed like 4 hours (maybe 40 mins), I took a board and paddle out to the water marker.  It was rough on the way out, but on the way back in was fun navigating through the rolling waves.   It was a good workout for sure.

After being on shore for a bit, taking a doze, it was time for the three of us to hit the water.  Well, we all made it out, the water was more turbulent than it was just 1 hour prior, however we did it.  We had planned to snorkel that day, however w/ all the waves and the COLD water we decided for next time with wet suits.  Back to the story..  as we almost finished our trip back to the shore and none of us falling in, what a better time for me to stand up and try to ride a wave or so in.   Jules yells out, it’s a big one (wave) and I immediately jumped up to see what I could do..  Yah I ate it..  WATER!  It was cold and woke me up just like that.

After the nice refreshing water, it was time to pack up and head home.  We hit Tahoe Brewing Company, had some yummy food and started planning the next day.

As I reflect back on they day, I think the best thing that I got for the trip is the $2.00 beanies from ToysRuS that Jules, Hay and I wore throughout the day, but most of all was the great times w/ two amazing women (Jules & Hay).

What can I say about Sand Harbor?   Arrive Early, plan well, watch the winds, and above all – do what makes you happy!

Early bird gets the worm – Tahoe 2015

For me, I have heard the words growing up “The early bird gets the worm” and then it was a  “yah-yah”, but now more than ever it proves to be accurate.

Let’s set the stage, we headed from home to Tahoe around 9:30am on Saturday with a few missions in mind:

  1. Check out Kite Boarding gear
  2. Look at new paddle boards – yes we knew exactly what we wanted
  3. Find a great place to SUP

Well, we drove in from the I80 side and w/n 5 mins of hitting the lake road, we stopped at the SUP shop and boom, there was the board we wanted and it was on discount for $150 off for end of summer sale.   We picked up the board, (now we have 3 boards), and we headed to Sand harbor, but as we proceeded around the lake each of the beach entries had the same sign..  “LOT FULL”.

So… we just kept going, hit a local brewery for burgers and then kept trucking around the lake.  Each beach looked promising and then “LOT FULL”.

We ended up right where we started and finally had an open spot, however it was after the 3, the water was choppy and rocks were abundant.

NOTE to SELF:  Leave at 6 or 7 am, plan better, bring food/snacks and of course. bring the water speaker for the SUP.

Happy SUP’ing and soon I’ll be talking about the kite surfing  journey..

Josh H

Oh yah – sold 2 out of 3 kayaks this weekend, and one more for sale.   I’m shifting to more SUP and Kite surfing, but yah never know I may be back into kayaking in the future.

Dotton Point – Folsom CA

Welcome back to the blog..  You haven’t missed much, but it’s time to talk about a new SUP location that I found today.   Today while driving into folsom, a generous bike rider flagged me down.  At first glance I thought he was pissed about something, but he rode up to my truck and said “Hey..  you looking to launch those boards somewhere?”.  Of course I said “yes”.  He proceeded to explain this location that reminded me of a somebody telling me how to get to my first GF’s house in the boonies in El Dorado County.  here’s what he said ..”go back down teh road about 5 blocks, look for a handicap parking sign, you will see 3 spots on the left, then go immediately right, and trust me when you get down to the water you will be happy”.

Well, you don’t have to tell me twice, I put the plan into action and followed the directions.     As I arrived to the location, the bike rider was dead on.  There was one other group that was far away from me.  I backed the rig right to the water and proceeded to eat my bfast, drink my triple shot espresso and enjoy the water.

After getting bfast down, it was time to hit the water.  I jumped into action and had an amazing paddle.

So.. where is this new place.   Let me try to explain and hope you can find it..

Start going east on douglas blvd (granite bay), hit the guard shack.   follow the road straight past all the boat launches and start on the windy road.   Keep going til you see “Dottons Point”.   NOTE:  pack food, drink, supplies..   so you can stay longer.      When you see 3 handicap spots on your right, turn immediately left.    you will have a very easy dirt path to get to the water.   ENJOY!    There’s a few rock pilings that are fun to paddle to and the boats stay away pretty much.

Well.. that’s it for today.. ENJOY the HillyREPORT.

Winter is coming or is it?

I have the ocean kayaks about to be moved indoors for the winter and debating how much I will pack the up, meaning clean up all the gear in prep for winter.

Wouldn’t it be EPIC to do a winter kayak trip?

Crazy busy summer… but where have you been?

Well.  It has been a crazy busy summer, less water time than I could have wanted.    however, we did venture out onto the water a few times this year, from lake clementine to scotts flat, folsom and beyond.    The one thing that I have to share about this summer is you have got to create a fast pack for the trip.  Meaning pull all your equipment together in a quick bin to throw in the car.   I have three bins of gear and it was a bit chaotic on water days to get all the right items into the truck and ready to go.  My plan this winter is to plan, organize and prepare for next summer.

What else?  well it’s 150th year of California parks.   The poppy pass went up to $150, but they added a few items to the mix (like museums, etc…)

where have you been this summer?

Camping Beer – say what?

Jules & I decided to take some beer on our camping trip, however we both agreed on no glass growlers or glass bottles.   So.. what to do now?

Well after our recent trip to Out of Bounds Brewery – http://outofboundsbrewing.com/?page_id=77 we saw that they are now offering their beer in these growler bags.   What a great idea, no glass and will be smaller in space for the trip back.

voila!   Solutions, not problems.

Preparation for a 3 day – 2 night excursion – Kayak + SUP

Weight planning for the journey

Weight planning for the journey

Kicking off the camping season right with a little of planning.   We have our full list of items captured and now it’s time to see how it all fits in the bags and respective kayak spots.   I will post during our journey about the load in process and how the camp site was for setup.       All I can say for tonight is…  “wish us luck”.

#Hilly OUT!

Spring – Summer of 2014

It’s beyond time to start thinking about hitting the water.   Today I had the opportunity to hit the pool to catch a quick swim and enjoy the vitamin D.   I was thinking about hitting the water this week and realized that all of my core gear is in a storage unit preparing for the move across town.    I was thinking of hitting pacifica on Friday w/ the boys, but yet the wetsuits are all in storage .     Then I thought well I could at least long board w/ the street paddle – oh crap that’s in storage as well.  So what to do?  not quite sure, beyond planning out an EPIC summer of two things…….

1)   Soft Waves – DOHO style, good breaks, long rides and great riding

2) Find the ULTRA HOP master – 3x IPA w/ the best flavor of the planet

So..  now it begins, the quest for 2014.  Hops & Waves…     I asked my oldest to create the new image of my blog w/ a few details and I can’t wait to see it.  Then after it’s created, the camera will be rolling, time to create a journal of the summer and start using new equipment.

Oh.  and in case your reading for my lego update, I’m going to create a separate series just on that. .  same place, but only focused on the LEGOS.   I am striving to get my Master builder status in the next 5 years.

“Stay above the swell my friends”.

Did you know I like legos?

After a stellar re-entry to Intel I woke up one morning and was thinking about how to build a larger scale model of one of the Intel buildings in beautiful Folsom, California.    I arrived at work, pulled up the internal blogging site & posted a comment  “Who would like to work with me to build one of the FM buildings in Legos”.   The responses flurried to the tune of 60+ comments with over 45 folks that wanted to be a part of it.   So I took the idea to the next step, booked a large conference room and a brainstorming session of what we could do.  The scope went from one building to something way more EPIC in my mind.

We agreed to do the following:

  • Full campus build out to scale and we took the following decisions on X, Y & Z – X&Y are 1/160th and Z was set to 1/60th
  • FM7 cut out of all 4 floors to showcase the different work environments – lab, data center, café, gym, etc.
  • We decided to bring in the latest technologies i.e. galileo boards, solar, lighting, sensors, etc..

While all this sounded great, we needed to get a sponsor, so after a few meetings with our site leadership team we were funded and ready to go.

We started with utilizing the Lego drawing tool and three of us went to work on designing the different buildings.  The buildings were done to scale correctly, withstand weight and handle all the needs for technology.    I give the team huge kudos for creating EPIC designs.  However, what we learned (thank you Tim @ LegoLand – “master builder”) not all pieces have been created or are available in the colors we dreamed up.

We then went to plan B.  Let’s get as many of the right colors regardless of sizes/shapes and just start putting it together.    I assume that after buying 50k pieces that somebody in the Legosphere is recognizing we are working on something big here in Folsom.

Next blog I’ll give status on the full campus, cut out and our technology.  Until then  LEGO ON!
Oh ..  I will post pictures as well.

Getting stuck is NOT KEWL at all.

Sand ..  Sand ..    Sand …

NO bueno is the sand that sticks to my jeep wheels and makes me stop in my tracks..

Earlier this year I told myself no more getting stuck when out on an adventure.   I waited til the time was right and I finally went out and upgraded to the F150 Super crew cab 4×4.  It’s a 2007, completely rocks and already getting it geared up for the season ahead.

I bought a few items right out of the gate, Yakima new roof mounts, bed liner was already installed (score) and then I got the bike rear bed cover that I could use w/ the kayaks.   The truck is working out great so far and I’m excited to see how much farther it will take us this next season.

What’s next?  GoPro truck mounts, definitely an open and need to get some long term mounts installed for ease of use and capturing the journey ahead.

Stay paddling my friends..
